Stories from the week of July 7, 2017

Too Old / Ineffective ??: Now that I am collecting social security, of course from time to time I doubt my ability to move the issue in Washington. Introspection and chatting with peers helps me understand my worth and my weaknesses.

I had just left a House office, when an intern, a 21 y/o local university student, came out and wanted a few minutes. He had been present to hear my 3-4-minute chatter, mini-presentation moments before. He said he was impressed and wanted to volunteer his time, after his intern period had ended this fall. We ended up with a 10 minute chat….. I guess I still have ‘the Right Stuff.’

BTW, I will put him to work this fall.

COP on the Hill:

Stories from the week of June 30, 2017

Renewing Foreign Relations: Friday I had a most enjoyable lunch with a customs officer attached to the German embassy…a follow-up to the reception a few weeks ago. We discussed how terrorists use drug smuggling routes to bring in weapons and bad guys.

Tough Duty/Work: Thursday evening I was invited and attended a soiree at the Trump Plaza for two Congressmen. It was enjoyable and productive. The hors-oeuvres were again amazing.

Step back and analyze: As we – the Team of Four – make more progress in the House and Senate, we realize that our bills will receive neither a hearing nor a vote for years to come. Thus, beginning next month, I will book myself and Don Murphy into every Rotary type club, every monthly VFW and American Legion meeting, talk radio show, editorial boards, etc. in the Congressional district of the committee chairman, Goodlatte, R-VA (near Roanoke). We will urge his constituents to call the Congressman and request a vote. If this strategy bears fruit, I would go to Speaker Ryan’s district in Wisconsin to do the same. Stay Tuned.

40 Minute Metro breakdown! Thank goodness: I had to catch a later train. Mr. Industrial Hemp entrepreneur from Colorado sat next to me for the hour ride home. I learned as much, as I had learned in the previous 20 years. His background is Colorado farmer/rancher.

Allies: Don Murphy – MPP – and I had breakfast with a rep from the American Legion at the Capitol Club on Thursday. 90 minutes later – all had a thorough understanding of how to proceed into the future…regarding increasing the access of God’s green plant into the hands of His people….small step, maybe medium…this org has chats with the White House on a regular basis.

Good sweat = good results: Later on Thursday I hung out with Don on the Capitol steps to grab a minute or two with the Congressmen. The sun, heat and humidity were nasty. The record-breaking results are below.

Personal Privilege: I have never, ever been a guy to go & “hang out” to see what develops. I prefer structure i.e. six, pre-arranged, date/time certain meetings type stuff…Don of MPP has taught me the value of his style and I will do more of this in the future. This old dog just learned a new trick.

Soirée: The German embassy held their summer reception Thursday evening & I was invited. Three hours of deutsches Bier and amazing hors-d’œuvres..and the surprise was a woman with excellent questions about American drug strategy. After 20 minutes she let me know she is a DEA agent attached to DC headquarters. We ended up with a wonderful half hour of constructive dialog/contact.

This week’s stats:

211 personal chats with a Member of Congress… 15 this week

Stories from the week of June 16, 2017

Felt real good: Have you ever wanted to tell a politician what a muffin head he is on an issue? As the House Members were leaving a hearing, I asked Cman Carter (R-TX & former judge) to let me walk with him. He agreed. After I said that LEAP members believe that, “if you have a drug problem, see a doctor;” he snorted, “You want to legalize all drugs, right??!!” Yes, I replied.
There was another minute of banter, and I said, ‘as pedophiles are going after my grandkids, you want the police to chase Willie Nelson. Why?’ At that, he shouted had put hundreds of them-pedophiles in prison and we parted our ways. My first sharp exchange since my arrival…Felt good actually.

Enjoy oneself and politic – Congressional Baseball Game: at 5PM we met at the Republican watering hole (Capitol Club). The tickets were good for a pre-game Happy Hour, bus ride and entrance to the ballpark. I was dressed for comfort (shorts & t-shirt). 5 hours later a solid 50 Congressmen/Senators had read the message in a relaxed atmosphere. ….any many hundreds of Republican spectators.

Don Murphy bought the tickets and urged all in reform to go. Some did. Thank you Don.

Detroit News published an oped on the game/shooting. The Shirt was in the foto! Woohoo:

Caution: A colleague this week expressed support for an oped which declared that ending the prohibition on hard drugs would be a disaster for the country. I was a bit shocked.
After the prohibition of marijuana is over and you believe that the remaining drugs should also be legalized & regulated, be careful to know the mission statement of organizations you support.

Stories from the week of June 9, 2017

One thing leads to another: Out of the Metro Station and about to climb the steps into the Cannon building, I noticed Cman Gaetz (R-FL) in the corner smoking a cigarette with 2 others (we had met two weeks prior). The four us had a nice, 2 minute chat. As the Cman signaled it was time for me to move on, his aide mentioned the opioid deaths/crisis.

I opened my briefcase to give her the summary of the Swiss MAT program (Medication-Assisted-Treatment). She spotted my German book and inquired why I had it. I replied I was brushing up for a meeting at the German embassy later this month. That led to more questions, as I informed the Cman that an x-cop is now a member of the German parliament and a legalizer of marijuana. All good stuff.

Allies: I had a 30-minute meeting with the lobbyist for the American Legion this week. The topic was their letter to the President regarding the need to get God’s green medicine into the hands of His people. Since I only know the basics of MMJ, I turned the ball over to my friends at MPP, Don Murphy and Bob Capecchi to provide the expertise on how to move the issue best in the byzantine corridors of the FDA, etc…stay tuned.. a shout out to John Gilmore for the American Legion contact.
