Cops on the Hill

Stories from the week of November 26, 2021

Johnny Appleseed:  During my presentations the past 14 months on decrim, I have asked the 325 odd aides to contact someone at their state capitol and have that office introduce a bill in 2021 and 2022.  This year 8 states did introduce an Oregon style bill.  We will know within 6 months, if this strategy bears fruit.

BTW:  I had one of my most engaged presentations this week with an aide from the South.  She listened intently and then had four great questions, one of which I could not answer.

Backup Is Everywhere:  FYI, there is a loose-knit organization called the ARO; Alliance of Reform Organizations….I called Doug McVay on Oregon about the question I could not answer and he zipped back the URL from the State of Oregon govt who can and will answer it…thanks Doug.

Frustration:   I have made enquiries.  The Democrats in the House are not interested in a clean, simple bill decrim of marijuana.  There are now two, Republican, House bills that are short and simple to end the federal prohibition of marijuana.   Senate Democrats also insist on the “Christmas Tree” approach to marijuana reform.  This guarantees no compromise and failure.

I quietly do my work and build bi-partisan support for ending the Drug War.  Look, again, to the States for most/all reform bills in 2022.

Happy Turkey Day!

Cops on the Hill

Stories from the week of November 12, 2021

Not for nothin:    This week I learned that Fox mega star Greg Gutfeld (of The Five) came out in an interview that all drugs, including heroin, should be legal.

At Grover’s I asked a long-term buddy of mine for his email address.  My very conservative friend is working on it.  I want Greg to know, he is Not alone.

Just Fun:   Going to the grocery store near my Better Half’s home on Tuesday, I was wearing my ‘French Shirt,’ as she does not like the jarring impact of Legalize Heroin shirt.  Outside an employee asked, “Pourquoi legaliser le cannabis?”  We ended in a 7-minute chat en français…His mother tongue was French.  That was just fun and had me smiling the rest of the evening.

Stories from the week of November 5, 2021

Speaking Truth to Power:   A.  I had a good chat with the communications director for Minority Leader McConnell this week: topic…National Decrim.  I very carefully explained that decrim has nothing to do with legalization and then provided the good news out of Oregon regarding the 80% reduction in police action (tickets) & 80% reduction in car searches for simple possession of hard drugs.

B.  At Grover Norquist’s meeting this week, the gentleman who ran the Youngkin  campaign for governor of Virginia happened to sit next to me.  Of course, I wear my mask (LEGALIZE HEROIN) during the meeting for safety and cheap advertising.

Before he left, I gave him my card with the message of let’s chat about drug policy.  You never know.

More cheerful news at the bottom.

The latest annual survey from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration shows yet again that the spread of marijuana legalization for adults to more states is not driving an increase in youth use. Teen cannabis consumption actually dropped in 2020.

Re: Oregon ……“We have no hammer,” said Josephine County Sheriff Dave Daniel, whose deputies had not issued a single class E violation as of Oct. 1, according to circuit court records. “What does that do for law enforcement to focus on those violations right now? We can look for car thefts, burglaries, assaults, and those sorts of things.”

One minute in French to our fellow officers in France who are now an organization of 150 who want to also legalize/regulate all drugs.  Their leader is near-native fluent in 3 languages.  I have extended them an offer to help anyway COP can.

Cops on the Hill: Stories from the month of October 2021

International:  I managed four (4) solid events during my five weeks of holidays.

I had a  meeting in Germany with the now retired federal officer who was the liaison between Germany and the USA law enforcement the past four years.

I spent the whole day with Dr Bürki, co-creator of the 1994-2021 Heroin Assisted Treatment in Switzerland.  He invited me accompany him to the “Top of Europe” and walk across the glacier there.  The good Doctor is still actively treating patients and his new information and insights were / will be helpful.

I had a working, two-hour lunch with a representative of the Swiss Health Ministry en français in Bern.  My usual contact was out on sick leave.  Lucien was very enthusiastic to see more changes in the Swiss approach to illegal drugs. We discussed all the changes and updates to their HAT program (heroin assisted treatment).

Always bring the cowboy hat:   In October, out of the blue, I had a request from LEAP Germany to go to Frankfurt for a day and a half of video interviews with a professional documentarian.  He is putting together vignettes of the interviews for use in LEAP’s public awareness campaign…Klaus said the American cowboy and cop combo will do well with a German audience…here is a snippet (in English)..1 minute .. Who is Howard?
