Cops on the Hill: Stories from the week of January 21, 2022

One big reason I go to the Grover Norquist – Center Right Wednesday meetings;

This from someone who has an excellent chance of being a Member of the US House

Good morning Cowboy.
Yes, it’s was a pleasure meeting and speaking with you. I am a true 10th
believer and follower. If it’s not enumerated in the Constitution… it’s
for the states and the people to decide.
You can count on my support of the 10th.
Commentary:   FWIW, yes, we have plenty of votes to end the federal prohibition of marijuana in both the House and Senate.  Sadly, the Dems will not bring up a clean, simple one page bill to do that.  They are holding out for a marijuana bill with lots of liberal goodies attached, making it impossible for Republicans to support.  Extremely sad.

Oregon Update for 2022:  I am sending out 535 individual emails to all Congressional staffers on what we know about their new, decrim of drugs law.  Copy at bottom.  Yes, this is taking a ton of time.

Weekly Activities:

Oregon Drug Decrim Update for 2022

  • Personal Responsibility is now the Cornerstone principle regarding drug use/abuse. Like alcohol,  cigarettes and other health issues are a matter of personal responsibility.  The War on Drugs is nearly over in Oregon.
  • After 10 months – no major, negative events/developments
  • 80% reduction in police action (tickets for simple possession)
  • 80% reduction in police searches, thus improving police/community relations
  • Treatment facilities are going on line slower than expected. 300 million was allocated in late 2021 to accomplish this by 2023.
  • No reports of increased use or Drug DUI
  • Half who receive a ticket are ignoring them, doing no follow-up
  • More police time for real crime. Quote from Oregon sheriff:

“We have no hammer,”** said Josephine County Sheriff Dave Daniel, whose deputies had not issued a single class E violation as of Oct. 1, according to circuit court records. “What does that do for law enforcement to focus on those violations right now? We can look for car thefts, burglaries, assaults, and those sorts of things.”

First published reports out of Oregon since total drug decrim for personal amounts went into effect on Feb. 1, 2021

Cops on the Hill: Stories from the week of January 14, 2022

Grandpa went off on a rant:

When I asked the legislative assistant, if she had question/concerns, she replied,” a few weeks ago I was talking to my grandfather and somehow the issue of the Drug War came up and he went off.  My grandpa agrees with you completely.”  Let’s hope she listens to Grandpa!!

Cops on the Hill

Stories from the last weeks of December, 2021

·         At the insistence of my Significant Other and family, I am going to not work until 2022.  I am Not 100% recovered from my adventure at the hospital and not much going at the Capitol anyway.

Off Duty Observations:  As you know, I wear my “ask me why legalize heroin” pretty much 24/7…for 3 ½ years.  I have been astounded by the lack of people screaming at me for whatever reasons…The guy at Panera Bread, “I agree with your shirt” as he was leaving the café; the guy at Costco passing me towards the cash registers, ‘I like your shirt” and just this week at the post office…The woman waited till I came back out and we ended up having a 10-minute chat in the parking lot.  She had lost “a lot” of people to heroin OD death.

The survey poll this spring showed 66% believe we should not put anyone in jail for simple possession of any drug.  No break down by party.  This indicates a new, higher level of compassion and awareness that locking someone up helps not.  This all bodes well for continuing the reduction in Drug War by law enforcement in 2022.

Stories from the week of December 10, 2021

Solid Week:  By invitation to the annual energy conference, I again was able to make contact with two House members and we talked drug policy.  I was also able to chat with their staffers and other staff who attended along with their bosses.

Yes, the risk of Covid (no one wore a mask) is there.  Please know I have been vaxxed and boosted, so should be ok.

Cops on the Hill

Stories from the week of December 3, 2021

Bad Start to the Week:  I missed my 3 appointments on Monday, due to being in the ICU of the local hospital for 5 days…small problem with tearing my esophagus on Sunday night while eating soup and almost bled out….needed two liters of blood.  Yes, it was a bit too close for comfort. The Angel of Death was near for about 12 hours.  Carpe’ Diem!

I did manage to make my Tuesday and Wednesday appointments and attended a virtual seminar on Marijuana on Thursday. I had a third appointment on Wednesday but he was under the weather.  They released me to home care on Saturday.  My Better Half is taking care of me, chicken soup, all that.

The Angel of Death was mightily disappointed, after being so close to success.

Full Schedule next week.
