Cops on the Hill: Stories from the weeks of April 8 & 15, 2022

Polar Opposite: This week an aide said that the Member will listen only to police officials regarding voting on change to the Drug War.  SMH….I have that office down as a: NO!

Oregon Decrim Update: Critics are jumping on two major points: 1) 90% of the those who received a civil infraction ticket for possession, simply threw them away, doing nothing.(much like people throw away parking tickets). 2) Not one bed for treatment is ready for those who want it.  The State is spending 300 million this year to make those facilities up and going.

Many critics are whining about the fact that the law does Not provide for mandatory treatment, something which was deliberately left out of the new law. Only 1% of the 2,000 persons who received a ticket have asked for treatment.

Cops on the Hill: Stories from the week of April 1, 2022

Speaking Frankly:    When I explained to a Republican aide the major, special interest groups (police, prosecutors, drug treatment industry and private prisons) who fight changes in the Drug War, she responded that her Boss had no problem giving those groups or any groups “The Middle Finger.”  I must say, that was a first in some 5,000 presentations I have made since 2005.  LOL  Made My Day. Refreshing!!!

Cops on the Hill:   Stories from the week of March 25, 2022

Slow & Steady wins the race: A certain, western Republican Senator has been there almost as long as me.  He has had several aides in that time and all refused to meet with me.  I am happy to report his newest one and I had a solid 30-minute chat about the Drug War and Oregon Decrim.

Earlier in our chat, I had mentioned my love for the 10th Amendment and how it was necessary in a Land so large; something I learned by traveling across this country at 6 MPH on a horse.  We had a chat about horses and I sent him and for his several colleagues who know how to saddle a horse, a copy of a short story my horse wrote about crossing really tall bridges (horses dislike bridges, BTW)

Me thinks the conversation will be remembered and I have confidence he ran the decrim idea up the chain.

Cops on the Hill

Unspoken Progress / Change in the Generations:

Very slow week with only 3 presentations to staffers…the week was saved, as I had 4 excellent small chats with R candidates running for Congress.  I smiled the rest of the day, as they expressed a POV that is very similar to the COP philosophy.  These men and women were all in mid-30’ to 50ish.

Cops on the Hill: Stories from the weeks of March 11, 2022

 Sky Above – Mud Below:

I had a most excellent chat with Senator Merkley’s (D-OR) aide for criminal justice.  The topic was Oregon’s, one-year, positive experience with total drug decrim.  She asked for and received the names of six, Senate, Republican staffers who expressed interest/support for the concept.  In the past 14 months, Majority Leader Schumer has only expressed in marijuana legislation and his aide will not take a meeting.  I am still pushing for a companion, decrim bill in the Senate.

The next day I had a good chat with the aide of my Congressman Trone (D-MD). She gave one excuse after another to do nothing on the topic of learning about the effective Swiss heroin treatment program.  Example: ‘you can’t imagine how difficult it is, the many hoops a Member has to jump thru to get approval for foreign travel.’  She ended the chat saying that, ‘no, CMan Trone will not talk to someone on the House Health committee about the Swiss approach.  Rather, I should do that and influence a Member to learn more.  Un, bleeping believable… = Mud Below

Me thinks the $40-billion Drug Treatment Industry has effectively bought our Congress and President.

My two-minute chat with freshman, Republican House Member Nancy Mace (R-SC) was refreshing and productive. I am not allowed to say on what we agreed.    She introduced last year the best, most comprehensive marijuana repeal bill I have seen in my 15 years on the Hill.   She was the first woman to graduate from The Citadel military academy in SC and it showed.  Wow!
