Stories from the week of August 4, 2017

Hey LEAP: As I was leaving a House office, a staffer called out. He had seen my name plate and wanted to say hi. He wanted to say thanks for all we do. He had gone to a LEAP presentation at his college.

Switch to Senate: Starting on Tuesday I began my visits to Senate offices. For some reason Senate offices are much better at meeting me on one request vs. the House which takes multiple email requests. I’ll end up with about 30 this month.

COP on the Hill:

Stories from the week of July 28, 2017

Ending of an Era: In 2004 at the National Sheriff’s Association convention I stopped by the DEA booth and picked up what would become my best tool to demonstrate the absolute futility of police efforts. At the top of their brochure it states, “Drugs are readily available to America’s youth…..” In Congress I have passed out this brochure to some 5,000 staffers. – every year thereafter, I had my DEA colleague/buddy confirm to me that the data/analysis was still correct.
This week I realized I was simply wasting paper and trees. Since (as I point out) heroin is available in every small town in every Congressional district AND the staffers and Members of Congress know and accept this before I walk in – I have ceased giving out the brochure. RIP DEA brochure…you are now old news.

Sales Tip of the Week – How you and your message can be remembered: As I passed out 2017 updates to Member offices, I take about 60 seconds to state COP beliefs and the need to employ the 10th amendment. The end of this statement goes like this, ‘once Congress employs the Tenth, you will have more time to discuss important issues and based on my experience as a street cop, . {dropping my voice to a soft whisper)..”everything is more important than God’s green plant.”
80% of the staffers smile or smile broadly at the whisper and out the door I go.

Olympia doesn’t need your help, Congresswoman: Karma always helps. I was in a bit of a hurry to catch the train, so I left the House complex via the Longworth building. In the crowded elevator, I was standing next to Cwoman McMorris-Rogers (WA-R & part of leadership). I acknowledged her (easier, since she is also 6 feet tall).

When she also went out the same door, I introduced myself and made my 10th amendment pitch. She pushed back. I told her Colorado and the others were doing just fine without Federal advice. ‘Olympia doesn’t need your help Congresswoman.’ We parted ways.

Big Table – Yes: Grover’s meeting had two US Senators this week. Senator Roberts (R-KS) started his presentation by commenting on my hat, then asked about my horse, thanked me for my police service and we had a ‘private’ dialog for 45 seconds. Later we had a great chat in the hallway on marijuana and the 10th Amendment.

Senator Strange (R-AL – took Sessions place) and I had a solid chat in the hallway after his presentation. Probably my place at the table helped to corral a bit of their time.

How’s it goin’ cowboy?: asked the voice behind me in the Longworth café. I turned to see Cman Labrador (R-ID)…we had a good chat, as I asked him to convince fellow Idaho Cman Simpson to vote 10th. It was about my third chat with him.
Personal Privilege – it was a thrill to have a Congressman make contact with me from out of the blue. This was a first in 10 years.

Too Old / Ineffective ??: Now that I am collecting social security, of course from time to time I doubt my ability to move the issue in Washington. Introspection and chatting with peers helps me understand my worth and my weaknesses.

I had just left a House office, when an intern, a 21 y/o local university student, came out and wanted a few minutes. He had been present to hear my 3-4-minute chatter, mini-presentation moments before. He said he was impressed and wanted to volunteer his time, after his intern period had ended this fall. We ended up with a 10 minute chat….. I guess I still have ‘the Right Stuff.’

BTW, I will put him to work this fall.
