Cops on the Hill
Stories from the week of July 2, 2021
Confusion hurts: As many of you know, even reformers use the two words: decrim and legalize as meaning the same thing. So, I am carefully explaining to staffers the difference. The task is a bit easier today than previously; Colorado has legal, regulated, taxed marijuana and Oregon has only decriminalized personal amounts….still illegal.
State Efforts: This week I had a solid chat with my state Senator’s Chief of Staff. I urged him to sponsor Maryland legislation to imitate Oregon.
If you would like me to contact your local state Senator or Rep, just provide me with contact info. Know that many states allow “pre-file” a bill for 2022, so now is still a good time.
Still on my radar: During a meeting today, I knew the Member was a nurse. I used that opening to speak for a minute about the Swiss heroin treatment program. I asked the staffer to pass the summary I sent on, to those she thinks might interested on the House Health sub-committee.

* Consider being a member of COP at $40.00 or more per year. All contributions are tax-deductible. 40 dollars buys all the copy paper COP uses in one year. Law Enforcement’s voice in opposition to current policy is vital on the Hill to achieve a repeal of federal drug prohibition. COP provides that voice. www.citizensopposingprohibition.org
